Start the New Financial Year Actually Organised
July 1 is 8 days away.
If you’re anything like me, you're probably telling yourself you'll get sorted before then. I said the same thing in January, again in May and, definitely this week.
This isn't a guilt trip, just a gentle reminder. You have a 7-day window. Use it on purpose and you'll actually start the new financial year ahead, instead of three months in playing catch-up.
Here's what I'm doing this week. Join me if it sounds good to you!
1. Brain dump first. Everything.
Before you can decide what's going on the calendar, you need to know what's even in your head.
20 minutes, a coffee (or a wine), a notebook (or the back of an envelope, I'm not precious).
• What deadlines are coming up - BAS, tax, school events, work?
• What promises did you make to yourself in January that haven't happened?
• What's been gnawing at you in the background? The dentist appointment. The doctor’s appointment. The returns sitting near the front door. The photos you meant to print. The thing you keep meaning to tell your partner.
Don't organise it. Just dump it.
This is the bit most of us skip. You can't plan a year you can't see. Get it out of your head first.
2. Pick a real top 3 for July to December
You don't need 17 priorities. Start with three.
Three things that, if you got them done in the next 6 months, would make this new financial year feel like a win.
Examples (not prescriptions):
• Pay off the credit card
• Walk three times a week
• Get your tax stuff sorted by August (not October)
• Plan one weekend away as a family
• Actually use the gym membership you've been guilt-paying for since February
Pick three. Write them down. Somewhere you'll see them every day.
Not in your phone. Not in a notes app you'll forget to open. Somewhere physical.
3. Build the visible system
Here's where most resets fall apart. You make a list, store it in your phone, never look at it again.
A planning system only works if you SEE it. Every day. Without having to open an app or remember to check a tab.
For me that's the magnetic monthly planner and notes planner on the fridge. The top 3 priorities written on notes planner. The weekly meal plan. The major dates for the month. All where I can't avoid them.
If you've been meaning to set this up since January (no shame, same), this week is your window. And lucky timing, our EOFY sale is running right now, so this is the cheapest moment of the year to do it. SHOP EOFY SALE.
4. Plan one calm week (just one)
Before July 1, plan the first week of July properly. Not the whole quarter. Just one week.
• What's the meal plan?
• What do the school holidays look like?
• What ONE thing are you doing toward your top 3?
• When's the rest day (write it down or it won't happen)?
One calm planned week sets the tone. Just like one chaotic Week 1 does the same - in the other direction.
5. Do the boring admin nobody wants to do
This is the bit. Do it now or it follows you into August:
• Receipts to your accountant
• Subscriptions you're not using - cancel
• Calendar audit - kill old recurring meetings and cancelled school events
• Inbox sweep - unsubscribe from anything you don’t want to see
• Bank statement review - where did the money actually go in June?
Set a timer. 90 minutes. Get most of it done, accept the rest, move on.
The whole point
You don't need to be perfectly organised by July 1. You need three priorities, a visible system, and one calm week to set the tone.
That's it.
If you've been meaning to grab a wall planner before this all kicks off, the EOFY sale is on now - up to 50% off selected pieces while stock lasts. The magnetic monthly is the most-used product we make for a reason. It's the one that goes on the fridge and gets used every day.
July 1 doesn't care if you've got your stuff together. But future-you in October will be very glad past-you used this week well.
