10 Things to Declutter This Summer

Because you deserve a home that feels calm, supportive and easy to live in — not another thing on your mental load.

The Christmas holidays in Australia bring warm days, slower routines and (hopefully) a little more breathing room. It’s the perfect time to reset your space before the new year rush hits again.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about supporting you, making life feel lighter, and taking the pressure off your future self.

Here’s a simple Siisti-style declutter challenge you can do over a weekend or spread across the school holidays.

1. Socks and undies you don’t love

If it’s stretched, holey, or just makes you feel “meh” when you put it on, it’s time to let it go.
Give yourself permission to refresh the essentials. Consider it a small act of self-care.

2. Kids’ shoes that don’t fit anymore

Australian summer hits and suddenly last year’s sandals are two sizes too small.
Clear out anything worn out or too tight. Donate what’s still in good condition and recycle the rest.

3. Old junk mail and catalogues

If your letterbox is still a paper magnet, recycle the entire pile.
Add a “No Junk Mail” sticker and switch to digital catalogues. One less thing on the kitchen bench equals instant calm.

4. Gift bags and wrapping overflow

Christmas is coming, which means more bags and wrap are on their way.
Keep a small selection you’ll actually use and donate the rest to your local school or daycare for craft.

5. Pantry items you’re not going to use

We all have those ambitious ingredients we thought we’d try.
Check expiry dates and move out anything you know you won’t eat. Reclaim your shelf space before holiday cooking starts.

6. Random household bits and bobs

You know the bowl. The one filled with mystery screws, broken toys, and things nobody can identify.
Ask the family if anything belongs to them, then clear the rest. You won’t miss it.

7. Skincare and makeup that’s expired

Opened products only last around 6 to 12 months.
If you haven’t reached for it in a year, it’s not serving you.
Give yourself permission to release anything old, crusty, or simply not your vibe anymore.

8. Kids puzzles and board games no one plays with

Some puzzles have missing pieces. Some games have been long outgrown.
Donate the ones still complete and loved. Clear the rest and make space for Christmas gifts.

9. The “I’ll deal with it later” corner in the garage

Summer holidays are the perfect time to tackle those forgotten items collecting dust.
Pick one thing. List it for sale or give it away. One small action creates big momentum.

10. Medicines and first-aid items past their prime

Check use-by dates, especially on opened creams and liquids.
Replace only what you truly need. Your future self will thank you during the next midnight fever moment.
